Selborne Hotel Tall Ships

Selborne Hotel is perfect for viewing the world famous Tall Ships event coming to Greenock on 9th - 12th July 2011


It is over 50 years since the first Tall Ships Races and 12 years since the fleet visited a Scottish port making this 2011 race all the more special. Starting off in Waterford, Greenock will be the second of five host ports this year. Over 60 ships are expected to take part amongst these will be 13 Class A, all rigged vessels including 3 Masted Schooners, Brigs and Full-rigged ships. The United Kingdom will be represented by the “Lord Nelson”, a Barque owned and run by The Jubilee Sailing Trust and the “Pelican of London”, the only ‘Mainmast’ Barquentine in the world.

The Tall Ships Races are open to any monohull vessel of more than 9.14m water line length, provided that at least 50 percent of the crew is aged between 15 and 25 years old, and that the vessel meets Sail Training International's safety equipment requirements. 

Greenock is situated across the Firth of Clyde from Dunoon and the Tall Ships fleet spectacular sailpast will be clearly seen from the garden’s of the Selborne Hotel - a stunning sight indeed.  Greenock is only 40 minutes away by car (via the ferry) so why not have the best of both worlds and book a break at the Selborne Hotel in the stunning scenery and tranquillity of Dunoon and take in the unique Tall Ships event at the same time. If you do decide to visit Greenock there will be plenty of opportunity to board the ships as well as enjoy  a range of family entertainment.

Why not make a real holiday of it, as well as the spectacle that the tall ships will bring, Dunoon makes a great base from which to explorer Scotland’s rugged scenery. Within just a few miles is some of Scotland’s most spectacular mountain scenery in the Argyll Forest Park. The journeys along Loch Eck and to Colintraive are amongst the most memorable anywhere in Scotland and the pleasure cruises run throughout the summer months sailing to destinations ranging from Loch Goil to Arran.
