Leisureplex Ops Director completes 5th charity walk
20th August 12
Alfa Leisureplex Hotel Group’s Operations Director Karen Sawbridge was presented the prestigious National Savings Committee Cup for the most sponsorship raised of any individual walker on the 16th July for the 5th time after completing the annual Bridgnorth Sponsored Walk with friends in just over 6 hours over the Queen’s Jubilee Bank Holiday.
This famous event has traditionally been held every Whit since 1967 and is a 22 mile walk started from Bridgnorth High Street and took circa 900 adult walkers along the Ludlow Road to the village of Cleobury North before walking to the summit of Brown Clee Hill (at 546 metres, the highest point in the West Midlands). After taking in the breath taking views from the summit Karen and her team walked through the village of Ditton Priors before returning to Bridgnorth High street.
This is the 5th time in 7 years that Karen has taken part in the walk and over the previous years has raised in the region of £15K for a number of good causes. This year the walk raised around £105K.
Karen said “This annual event is very close to my heart and I have enjoyed each year, even the rainy ones! In 2006, 2007 & 2008 I walked (along with some friends as Trevor’s Trekkers) for Leukaemia Research, because my colleague, Trevor Newall, who was a long standing employee of our group was diagnosed with Leukaemia in February 2006. Trevor battled on with this disease for around 18 months before he passed away in September 2007. In 2011 I walked for Prostrate Cancer UK, because one of the Trevor’s Trekkers was diagnosed with Prostrate Cancer and this year I walked for Alzheimer’s Research UK because my Uncle Pete was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and he passed away in April 2012”.
