Grand Pier at Weston receives seal of approval
5th August 11
The Princess Royal has officially re-opened the £39 million Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare – three years after it was burned to the ground.
After seeing the damage herself on a visit in December 2008, the Princess unveiled a plaque to mark the structure’s resurrection. The square opposite the town’s pier was also named in her honour.
She said: “Thank you very much for the honour of unveiling this plaque and using my name for the square.
“Can I just offer my congratulations to all of you and everyone who has been involved in this fascinating transformation for Weston.
“I hope that everybody who comes here will appreciate the effort that has been put in, in order to maintain Weston’s place as a really first class venue for an enjoyable holiday experience.”
The 104-year-old Weston Pier was completely destroyed in July 2008 by an electrical fault fire which took just 90 minutes to reduce it to rubble. But the attraction has now risen from the ashes and been hailed as ''the biggest boost to a British seaside resort'' for nearly a century.
The new-look pier can hold 6,700 people and is expected to attract four million visitors a year. It boasts everything from traditional seaside rides such as dodgems and carousels to state-of-the art rollercoasters.
The biggest ride is the 1,000ft Go Kart track split over two levels and it is also home to Britain's smallest rollercoaster, the Robocoaster. There are plans to add a 300ft high revolving, panoramic viewing tower which will offer visitors a 360 degree view of the coastline. The five-storey landmark also features four round corner towers, an undercover walkway and extensive decking and restaurants.
It is illuminated at night and even has wind turbines to generate its own electricity supply.
Alfa Travel operates short breaks to the Leisureplex owned Anchor Head Hotel which is splendidly situated overlooking Weston Bay and where the most breath-taking sunsets can be enjoyed from many of the public rooms and bedrooms. All 52 bedrooms have central heating and bath or shower & WC. There is also the delightful Anchor Bar with dance floor and entertainment most evenings.
